What are aquifers and why is it important to take care of them?

Aquifers are natural water reservoirs that lie beneath the earth's surface. These subway sources are replenished mainly by rainwater that seeps into the ground naturally.

Every day millions of people benefit from them by using water on a daily basis in the home, in industry and in agriculture.

In Mexico we are privileged because we have 635 aquifers throughout the national territory, however, 115 of them are in a state of overexploitation, as we are extracting more water than can be recharged naturally, which puts at risk the present and future supply of the vital liquid. There is still time.

How can we reverse the Water Footprint?

This effect can be combated by increasing the natural recharge of aquifers with reforestation and green infrastructure, reducing water consumption in the countryside through irrigation technology, implementing conservation agriculture and making responsible use of water in industry, the countryside and in homes. We are all part of the solution.

Thus, Grupo Modelo and the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ) have joined forces to create the Aguas Firmes Program, with the objective of increasing the water sustainability of the aquifers of Apan, Hidalgo, and Calera, Zacatecas, with an investment of almost 10 million dollars starting in 2021.

With this union, the Aguas Firmes Program seeks to:

Increase aquifer recharge with nature-based solutions, mainly with reforestation, green infrastructure and conservation works such as contour curbs, gabion dams, gully headwaters, stone barriers, and cleaning and sanitation.
Support producers with easy and accessible credits to treat their fields with modern irrigation systems and implement sustainable agricultural practices such as conservation agriculture, which in addition to reducing water consumption and increasing productivity, has a direct impact on the low emission of greenhouse gases (GHG).
Promote Collective Governance projects and agreements with the community to ensure long-term success.
Have a system for monitoring and evaluating aquifers in almost 200 stations to measure water regeneration and savings.
